Adult Farewell Party and Cleanup

Budget: $50

This job entails organizing the festivities that ensue late Friday night after chapel and often running into early Saturday morning, for adults who wish a fun-lovin' farewell to Star. It is usually held in Newton Center because of the size of the crowd and proximity to refrigeration. It is best accomplished by a group, with one person or a couple in charge.

The question arises each year as to whether or not to have this party be alcohol free. In 1994 and 1995 it was alcohol free and teens were allowed to come. The front room of Newton Centre was turned into a coffee house (with checkered tablecloths and candles in colored glass jars obtained from conference services). Attendance was rather low, and teens attended their own party. Perhaps teens only want to come when they're not allowed. In 1996, it went back to the previous alternative, an ADULTS ONLY party where everyone donates their leftovers and alcohol is allowed. It's been that way since.

Most of the food and spirits arrive spontaneously, due to leftovers from Social Hour and people's personal stock. But you should provide some mixers, ice (from the Snack Bar), and possibly nibbles. Check with the people who run Social Hour to get estimates for what may be leftover. Conferees should be encouraged to donate their leftover treats and beverages from the week.

Examples of past purchases: 5-6 (2-liter) bottles of coke, ginger ale, seltzer, tonic, juices, cups, small plates/bowls (depending on snacks) 3-4 bags of ice (order ahead from snack bar).

In 2009 we are allocating a budget of $50 for soda, ice, etc. and are asking that people bring their leftovers (food & drink) to the party as has been done in past years. Please do not order food from conferences services, although you will need to order ice. However, this means you will need to purchase and transport soft drinks to the island.

People tend to linger on, so close up shop as far as eats and drinks are concerned around midnight because Newton must be left clean and neat. Tell those who choose to stay on that they are responsible to clean up when they leave. NO LIQUOR, BEER OR WINE MAY BE LEFT AROUND!!! Pour it out or put it in a sealed carton, which an adult must deliver to another adult (such as an RE Conference chair) to take to the mainland. All food should be thrown away or packaged to take home.

Check with Adult Farewell Music person for music for the evening.
