Great People Hunt Coordinator
Great People Hunt Coordinator
Number of People: 1
Budget: $0
The Great People Hunt is a dramatized game of hide and seek in which the Senior Teens hide and the younger kids hunt. Those caught are sacrificed to the sea gods off the end of the pier. You should co-ordinate closely with the Senior Teen advisors. They take on the bulk of the task and our job is to take some of the island coordination off their shoulders plus make sure things are in control, and bells are ringing on time while the group is off hiding.
Your Job:
1. Co-ordinate with teen leaders, make sure instructions are clear
2. Ask Mid and Jr teen advisors to ask them to a - not cheat, b - help a younger kid find a ST
3. Arrange with conference services ahead of time for a life guard (no guard - no sacrifice, delay is terrible). They are needed for 15 minutes about 30 minutes after scheduled start time.
4. Arrange with conference services ahead of time for permission to have the teens take a shower. (If GPH is on a Thursday then Pels shower after lobster night so the teens may not get permission to shower)
5. On the night, ring the bell (coordinate first bell with ST advisors)
6. You may want to rope in a couple of overseers from the crowd to help corral the kids and keep some sort of order.
7. Watch out for any upset kids and send parents in as necessary. (there are only so many ST to go around)
The Rules:
Instructions given to Kids (hunters)
1. First Bell rings
- teens have 5 minutes to hide
- within the children’s boundaries
- not on roofs, or under buildings
- not in buildings or fire escapes (porches OK)
- kids remain on stairs (with eyes closed)
2. Second bell rings
- kids get to hunt for 10 minutes
- the senior teen should surrender as soon as they are discovered
- kids marches the ST back to base with head hung in shame
3. Third bell rings
- the teens return
- they try to get back to base without getting tagged
- they should stop when tagged
- kids should not be using linebacker tactics to stop the ST
- things can get a little out of hand here
- make sure teens and kids are reminded beforehand that safety is paramount
4. Final bell rings (game over)
Traditions:
1. ST wear black camouflage
2. since 2002- 2003 ST alumni have been invited to join in to give the kids more people to catch
3. Mid-teens cannot join the ST no matter how much they beg and grovel
4. Teens chant at dinner (after announcements) running in from the deck (2, 4, 6,8 We are the people great - we won’t be caught, we won’t be caught, we won’t be caught)
5. Kids reply 2,4,6,8 senior teens are shark bait - you will be caught ...
6. Teens have a bounty on their heads (typically $2-3 on a decorated snack bar gift plate)
7. Teens strip for march up the pier, lined up in the order they where caught, kum-ba-yah-ing all the way, hands on the shoulders of the person in front, head bowed in shame. In theory only those caught need to swim with the fishes, in practice the teens all go together to show solidarity.
HAVE FUN!!!
